Description
An introduction to samba de roda for the joy of singing in a circle, in rhythm, all together.
This workshop led by Karla da Silva invites participants to explore samba de roda, its rhythms and songs, as well as the links between this traditional and popular artistic practice and the traditions of candomblé.
Open to all levels and curious minds in general!
Program
Through a teaching method based on oral transmission, active listening, imitation and repetition, participants will work on the voice, breath, rhythms and memorisation of songs. Breathing exercises, body percussion and call-and-response games will allow everyone to gradually enter the world of samba de roda. As in the candomblé terreiro, where these songs are passed down orally, this workshop is open to everyone, regardless of age, level or background. Participants will have the opportunity to discover samba de roda and, within the circle, each person will find their place to share the joy of singing — and dancing! — together in chorus.
Practical advice : as vocal work also engages the body, please come wearing light, comfortable clothing.
Karla da Silva
Karla da Silva is part of a new generation of singers and composers from the working-class neighbourhoods of Rio de Janeiro. Born and raised in Madureira, one of the cradles of samba schools, she shaped her voice both in the bohemian nights of Lapa and in ceremonies dedicated to the orixás.Her powerful, deeply emotional tone carries the history of the Brazilian people. With three albums to her name, the artist has received several awards and distinctions. Her latest album, Sotak, was praised by the press in France, Portugal and England. In her upcoming album, BATUK (2026), Karla da Silva brings her Afro-Brazilian heritage to life: her rooted voice transmits and renews the cultural legacy she embodies.
“New queen of samba” — Libération
